Determination of Acid Value of Edible Oils by Fully Automated Potentiometric Titration

1. Introduction

Acid value determination reflects the degree of acidity or rancidity of oil and is one of the basic indicators for detecting whether an oil is rancid.

Common edible oils include vegetable oils, animal oils, and some blended oils. Although all are edible oils, their acid values differ. Acid value is a crucial aspect of oil testing, enabling comparison of quality differences and differentiation between good and bad oils.

This method uses the JH-T6 fully automated potentiometric titration system from Shanghai Jiahang to determine the acid value of edible oils. It exhibits good repeatability and a clear abrupt change, accurately determining the acid value of the oil and providing a reliable basis for oil testing.

2. Instruments and Reagents

2.1 Instruments

JH-T6 fully automatic potentiometric titrator, non-aqueous pH composite electrode, 10mL burette

2.2 Reagents

Potassium hydroxide-ethanol solution (0.1006mol/L), anhydrous diethyl ether-isopropanol (1:1).

3. Experimental Methods

3.1 Experimental Procedure

Accurately weigh 20.0000g of sample, accurate to 0.0001g. Dissolve the sample completely in anhydrous diethyl ether and isopropanol mixed solution (1:1). Titrate with potassium hydroxide-ethanol standard solution (0.1mol/L) to the potentiometric endpoint and record the endpoint volume. Perform a blank test simultaneously.

4.2 Calculation Formula

Acid Value Calculation Formula:

m
Where: X---Acid value of the sample (calculated as potassium hydroxide), in milligrams per gram (mg/g)

V---Volume of potassium hydroxide standard titration solution consumed by the sample, in milliliters (ml)
c---Actual concentration of potassium hydroxide standard titration, in moles per liter (mol/L)
m---Mass of the sample, in grams (g)

56.1---Molar mass of potassium hydroxide, in grams per mole (g/mol)

4.3 Titration Spectrum

1) Sunflower Oil

2) Peanut oil

3) Corn oil

4.4 Conclusion

The results show that the determination of acid value in several edible oils using a fully automatic potentiometric titrator exhibits good repeatability and meets the requirements of the national standard.

The operation is safe, reduces contact between humans and organic reagents, and improves work efficiency and experimental accuracy.
